ONE AMERICA

 Goals and Objectives

Goal:    Create understanding of the role of the environment in shaping culture and history

Objective:

  • Participate in environmental service projects that demonstrate cultural dependence on the immediate, natural environment.

  • Visit historic sites and experience cultural activities that exemplify these inter-relationships

Goal:    Promote international understanding and tolerance by teaching youth that people from different cultural backgrounds aren’t inherently better or worse, only different.

Objective:

  • Create international projects and experiences that provide insights and understanding of peoples’ individual and cultural similarities and differences

  • Demonstrate tolerance and acceptance of people from different cultures by providing youth with “hands-on” opportunities to experience those cultures

Goal:   Encourage an “attitude of gratitude” among young people by providing them opportunities to discover and develop an appreciation of the opportunities and good fortunes they have.

Objective:

  • Develop an understanding that happiness isn’t necessarily defined by material possessions by allowing young people to live and work side by side with people of widely different social and economic backgrounds.

  • Encourage personal interaction through shared work, meals, friendships, and organized activities.

Goal:   Instill a sense of personal responsibility; demonstrate the importance of interdependency between group members, and develop the leadership skills of youth participants.

Objective:

  • Involve participants in the planning, decision-making, and organizational activities needed to complete projects.

  • Give administrative and leadership responsibilities to youth who’ve participated in previous programs.
  • Allow less experienced participants the opportunity to demonstrate responsibility by giving them clear but generous behavior and performance guidelines.
